From the Counselor
Coe’s school counselor, Sarah Waymouth, provides useful resources and tools that focus on support for all families. At school she works with students individually, in small groups, and in classroom lessons as well as partnering with families and staff to address our community needs and bring our Coe values to life.
Check out these resources and share them with fellow Coe parents. Help us spread the word and support one another.
Screen Time
As winter draws in there can be a tendency to replace outside fresh air time with more screen time. The shorter days bring children inside looking for entertainment and gaming or screen time often increases. Many people write about appropriate levels of screen time, how to manage social media, and how to approach internet safety. At Coe we recommend your family talks openly with your children about what a healthy amount of screen time means to you. It can be beneficial to make a screen time plan together because it increases buy-in and often prevents arguments in the future.

Anxiety & Resilience
Anxiety is increasing in our schools and nurturing resilience during the foundational years of elementary school is key to helping develop a growth mindset for a successful and happy life. In March we welcomed Katie Gruver from Positive Parenting Seattle to share her wisdom and expertise with our Coe community. Katie’s presentation provides many helpful resources and tips for managing anxiety and worries in your child, and nurturing resilience skills.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging
At Coe we value diversity and strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. Parents and caregivers can help support this goal by talking to students about being inclusive and speaking up when they observe biased language or behavior.
Coe SEL Tools
At Coe Elementary we prioritize social and emotional learning (SEL) from Kindergarten through 5th grade. If our students are able to build their social and emotional skills they will be able to access their academics more effectively, engage fully in school, and build skills that will last with them forever.
Bullying Prevention at Coe
At Coe we have a cross-grade coordinated approach to bullying prevention with a focus of work in October for Bullying Prevention Month that continues throughout the school year. A highlight of the month is Unity Day when we collectively unite for kindness, acceptance and inclusion to send a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying.
